35mm slides

SLIDES FROM FREELANCE GRAPHICS

PhotoGraphic Specialties is a service bureau which uses Freelance Graphics 9 (Millenium Edition) to make 35mm slides. We accept Freelance Graphics .prz files from versions 96 and 97 as well as version 9.

There is information on the internet that you may have seen which states that there is a bug in Freelance which prevents it from printing in color. The author of this information is amazed that Lotus never fixed the problem, but the true story is that there is no bug in our system. If you want color slides, we will be happy to make them for you.

Do not rely on Freelance's "File...Setup for 35mm Slides" drop down menu item to show you how your slides will look. Instead, follow the instructions here:

The slide page size is set automatically by your default printer. Our film recorder will print 11.0 inches horizontally by 7.33 inches vertically. Since you probably do not have a printer that has that page size, we suggest that you choose a printer that can print on paper that is 11.0 inches wide by 8.50 inches high and not place anything too close to the top and the bottom of the page.

If you have "show rulers" checked on the "view" drop-down menu, you will be able to figure out where the image will be cut off - imagine horizontal lines about 1/4 inch down from the top and about 1/4 inch up from the bottom. Items in the background, text, and clip art beyond these lines will not appear on your slide. You should leave some additional space below the top imaginary horizontal line and some additional space above the bottom imaginary horizontal line so that the text does not fall at the very top or bottom of the slide. On the other hand, when we print to the film recorder, Freelance will add about 3/4 inch of background to both the left and the right sides of the slide to match the background you can see on the screen. Your text or art may thus go all the way from 0 inches on the left to 11 inches on the right without being cut off.

Of course, if you are one of the fortunate people with a printer that can select a page size of 11.0 inches by 7.33 inches, you will be able to see exactly what will be on your slide and can ignore the above instructions. However, you do have to remember to leave about 1/4 to 1/2 inch blank space on all four sides of your text area so that the text does not go right to the edges of the slide.

When you save your file, go to the drop-down menu in the upper left of your screen; choose "File," then "Save As," and save the file as a Freelance .prz file. We have installed on our machine all the fonts which came with Freelance Graphics 96, 97, and Release 9, as well as with Windows.

Photographic Specialties is no longer producing slides and transparencies. I have been self-employed for 35 years, but looking forward to retirement since my wife died five years ago. With the decline of conventional photography and the recent recession, the availability of film and chemicals as well as the volume of work has declined to such an extent that it is no longer possible to have fresh chemicals to develop film. I hope that if you still need conventional slides and transparencies, you will be able to find someone who can produce them for you. Thank you for your orders over the years.
